METALLICA's LARS ULRICH was recently asked about his unique drumming style . . . and he said, quote, "I've never been very interested in ability . . . [like] 'Oh, wow! This guy is so great!'
"Yeah, he's so great, but it doesn't mean that he can make it swing, or it doesn't mean that he can make it work within a group or a collective." He said he considers the drums a group instrument, and doesn't like sitting down and playing solo.
He did say that he's a fan of Deep Purple drummer Ian Paice, who, quote, "obviously has a lot of ability." But he prefers more workmanlike and less showy musicians like AC/DC's Phil Rudd and the Rolling Stones' Charlie Watts.
